Since it was established in 1980, the Aetna Foundation has awarded more than $445 million to promote wellness, health and access to high-quality health care. There are 3 ways in which Aetna is supporting the community: providing grants and awards from the Aetna Foundation; establishing partnerships within local communities and through employee volunteering and giving. The grants are focused on issues that improve health and the health care system, such as healthy eating and active living and health care equity.

Aetna’s Regional grants (up to $50,000) are provided to nonprofits with activities in the following areas:

• Community-based nutrition education and exercise programs for children and families;  efforts to increase the availability or affordability of fresh fruits and vegetables;
• Programs that help families to select and prepare healthy foods on a limited budget;
• Community gardening and urban farming activities;
• Innovative approaches to making physical activity accessible, affordable and fun (e.g., digital solutions)

However, priority will be given to applications that focus on healthy eating and active living through a racial and ethnic health equity lens.

In order to apply for a Regional grant, the nonprofit organization must have its 501c3 status approved and serve in one of the targeted areas. The applications must be submitted online; indirect costs may not exceed 15% of the total amount requested; and grant requests cannot exceed 20% of an applicant’s total operating budget.

All recipients are required to report the program’s impact on the community.

Aetna employees are also contributing to the company’s corporate responsibility success. In 2013 Aetna employees gave more than 400,000 hours of their time to help their local communities. They volunteered in delivering meals to homebound residents; donating blood to the American Red Cross; Collecting food and clothing to help the homeless, etc.

The Cigna Foundation—through its World of Difference Grants program—is looking for nonprofit organizations to closely collaborate on projects that address four health focus areas. Pilot grants of $75,000-$125,000 will cover the initial year of this collaboration. After that pilot period, projects that meet established objectives may be offered either development or program grants at appropriate funding levels.

• Children’s Wellness
• Women’s Health
• Senior Care
• Health Equity

Program Requirements

• A pilot (or early stage) multi-year project that directly serves the needs of individuals in the health focus area under consideration
• A focus on a specific health challenge or related group of challenges being faced by those individuals
• An innovative approach that stresses the importance of engaging the individuals being served in meeting the health challenges related to project objectives
• Opportunities for volunteer involvement by the Cigna team
• Potential to expand to additional geographic areas (special consideration will be given to projects that provide or have the potential to provide services globally)
• A fiscally-sound development plan with strong emphasis on metrics, analysis and reporting

All organizations requesting funding must be current 501(c)(3) public charities.

PNC Foundation has been supporting nonprofit organizations for decades. The Foundation exists to establish partnerships with community-based nonprofit organizations in order to enhance educational opportunities for children and to promote the growth of targeted communities through economic development initiatives. PNC Foundation concentrates its charitable giving on nonprofit organizations focusing on the following areas:

• Education–the Foundation provides sponsorship to less-fortunate children, ages 0-5; and to programs that focus in the areas of math, science, financial education and also provide direct services to children in their classroom; professional development to teachers; family engagement, etc.
• Economic Development & Community Services– sponsorship is provided to community development initiatives that promote the growth of targeted low-and moderate-income communities and/or provide services to these communities, such as job training programs, early learning and educational enrichment programs for children in low-and moderate-income families.
• Affordable Housing and Community Development – grants are provided to nonprofits that provide transitional housing and/or counseling services; as well as nonprofit organizations that provide services for small businesses;

The charitable grants and sponsorship are provided to nonprofits that operate in regions where The PNC Financial Services Group has strong presence. Some of the qualifying states include: Alabama, Florida, Delaware, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Kentucky, and others.

American Express Foundation is supporting nonprofit organizations focusing their activities on Historic Preservation, Leadership and Community Service. Each year hundreds of nonprofit charitable organizations receive grants which reflects company’s values and business priorities. American Express Foundation concentrates its charitable giving on nonprofit organizations, providing the following activities:

• Disaster Relief – so far American Express has provided assistance for over 50 disasters in 35 countries;
• Employee-Driven Philanthropy – this is the gift matching program. Through this program the American Express Charitable Fund provided over $5.8 million in funds to match over $5.9 million in employee donations in 2011. In addition, the fund awarded $220,500 to 236 nonprofits on behalf of its employee’s volunteer service in 2011;
• American Express Leadership Academy – Academy focuses on building the personal, business and leadership skills needed to run a successful nonprofit organization;
• Historic Preservation Initiatives – the Program aims to increase public awareness of the importance of historic and environmental conservation, preserve global historic and cultural landmarks, educate visitors on sustainable tourism and strengthen local communities through preservation efforts;
• Serve2Gether Consulting – employing teams of Amex employees to provide pro-bono consulting to key nonprofit organizations.

When providing grants, American Express Foundation gives priority to projects of nonprofit organizations, serving one of these areas in US: South Florida, Greater Phoenix, New York City, Salt Lake City and Washington DC. Some of the countries abroad include: Argentina, Germany, Mexico, United Kingdom, Greater China and others.

The applications for grants are accepted online. Each applying organization must pass the eligibility test, consisting of questions regarding area of operation; whether the organization has its 501c3 tax-exempt status approved by the IRS, area of operation and other questions.
