Each year The Coca-Cola Company is giving back 1% of its prior year’s operating income through their philanthropic foundation, The Coca-Cola Foundation. Thus, since 1984, the Company has donated more than $650 million to support communities worldwide. In 2013 alone, $98 million was granted to benefit 134 million people in 122 countries.
Grant applications are submitted exclusively online and are accepted year round. There is no dollar limitation for the grant application (in 2013, grants varied from $20,000 to $6.75 million).
The Coca-Cola Foundation focuses on funding the following causes:
- Women: Economic Empowerment and Entrepreneurship;
- Water: clean water, water conservation and recycling;
- Well-being: healthy living, education and youth development
The Foundation also supports nonprofit organizations which focus on arts and culture, community and economic development in the United States, and HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness in Africa and Latin America. The Foundation also provides emergency relief during natural disasters.
One note to remember is that The Coca-Cola Foundation’ grants do not fund acquiring land or building, equipment, or construction and renovation projects.
The Coca-Cola Company provides matching gifts that encourage employees to contribute to their favorite charitable causes. Thus, if an employee makes a contribution to a charitable organization, the organization may be eligible to get a matching gift from The Coca-Cola Foundation on a 2-for-1 basis.
